Stairs are simply dangerous places, whether the stairs are inside or out. An inside staircase covered with junk, perhaps papers or children's toys, is dangerous, but a perfectly clean one can also have dangerous and deadly falls. An outside staircase that's dimly lit and covered with debris, perhaps leaves or dirt, and maybe slippery from rain and/or ice and snow, is dangerous. But a brightly lit clean one that's not slippery can also be the site of bad falls.
Stairs are simply dangerous, and anything we can do to make them safer is good for protecting ourselves, loved ones, just about everyone, as well reduce the likelihood of lawsuits.
There are several things we can do to make stairs and staircases safer. Keeping them clean and clear, making sure they are well lit, and installing good handrails are steps we should consider.
In addition, some kind of non slip stair tread or covering is something to strongly consider. There are several types available.
They include:
Rubber Stair Tread, which consists of pieces of rubber contoured with non slip treads. These are widely available, and each tread usually covers one stair although with some types each one may cover two or more treads. Some of these have an adhesive backing for easy installation, and others need to be somehow attached, whether glued, tacked, etc. There are even heated models that melt ice and snow!
Vinyl Stair Tread is quite popular and similar to rubber versions. It's normally cheaper and popular for industrial and commercial applications.
Stair Tread Rugs are small rugs that are placed on each stair. They come in a multitude of colors and patterns, and may be merely functional or decorative and beautiful as well.
Stair Tread Carpet usually refers to a piece of carpet that is installed upon the entire staircase, Often the edges of the stairs are exposed, especially if the stairs are attractive as in hardwood stairs.
Stair treads not only help prevent slips and falls, but protect stairs from wear and tear as well as bumps, scratches, chips, and bruises, and many add to the decor as well.
Other options similar to stair treads include non slip tape as well as special paint and other anti-slip floor coatings.
Lots of people slip and fall or die on stairs every year. They could include people you know and love or even yourself! It's well worth considering some type of non slip stair tread. I know I have added some recently as I've had relatives take bad falls recently, although fortunately nothing serious happened beyond an unexpected ambulance ride to the hospital!
