Stair tread rugs are simply small rugs placed on stairs for safety, decor, and to protect the stairs from wear.
Safety is of course critically important. Unfortunately lots of people fall on stairs and staircases every year and get injured and sometimes even die. Stairs and staircases can be very slippery, and these small rugs can prevent people from slipping and falling.
Stair tread rugs are attached to your stairs in various ways, including adhesive, double stick mesh, non slip pads, or carpet tacks. Some have non skid backing and don't need to be permanently attached, ideal if you you're not sure of the style as well as for cleaning - you can pick them up and shake them out just like doormats as well as put them through the washer if needed.
They come in an almost infinite number of styles and patterns and sizes, much like floor rugs, and you can spend a lot of time picking the perfect ones to complement their surrounds.
My friend Irma spent weeks looking for the perfect ones. I though she was being ridiculous until I saw the final result. They were beautiful and really did add to the beauty of her house as well as making her somewhat slippery master staircase safer.
Most stair tread rugs are made for indoor use, but there are also models designed for outdoor use as well. Irma has some on the staircase on her back patio as well.
Stair treads also help protect your stairs, almost always a high traffic and high wear area, for normal wear and tear, bumps and bruises, as well as chips.
You can spend a lot of money on any rugs or carpets, including these, but many of them are surprisingly affordable. They are after all only small pieces. You can buy them almost anywhere, and it's worth shopping around to see the variety available. Of course you'll find the largest variety available online.
